Informed
Consent is the dialogue that takes place between a physician and the
caregiver or resident that offers an explanation of medical treatment options
and the risks and benefits of this treatment. The physician invites the resident
or caregiver to be actively involved in the decision-making process. The most
important part of this process is the caregiver and residents understanding of
the information that is being presented. Any facility that is administering any
kind of medical treatment that may have important risks first must obtain the
informed consent of the patient involved.
The two most
important factors about informed consent are the physicians ability to
accurately inform the patient and the patients ability to understand
the information. Besides that, the patient or the caregiver must have some sort
of active role in the whole process. As with any medical diagnosis or procedure,
the more information you are able to obtain, the more comfortable you will be
with the ultimate decision.
Consider the
following questions when you meet with the doctor:
What medical
treatment or procedure are you considering?
Where would
this treatment or procedure take place?
What are the
possible risks and the recovery time?
Are there any
side effects and how long will they last?
Will this
treatment improve the patients quality of life in any way?
What is the
cost of this treatment?
If we do not
choose this treatment, what other treatment would you recommend?
Do you accept
Medicare and Medicaid?
Keep in mind
people have the right to accept or refuse medical treatment. They also
have the right to change their minds once they have agreed to a specific
treatment. The doctors and nurses that are involved will always document the
patients wishes.
