Caregiver Burnout

You must take care of yourself. We really cannot stress this enough. The opportunity for you to become totally overwhelmed and burnt out is very possible right now. Many of the feelings you are experiencing may be very similar to those feelings people experience from depression. Ask yourself these questions.

· Do you feel like you are avoiding people?

· Do you think you are more short-tempered than you used to be?

· Are you experiencing any changes in your appetite?

· Are you getting sick more often than normal?

· Do you feel tired because your sleep seems to be disturbed?

· Do you feel like there is no light at the end of the tunnel?

If you have answered, yes to the majority of these questions, you may be experiencing burn out or some depression. Recognize these early signals and immediately figure out a way to take some time out for you.

· Do you think you are too busy to take a walk or relax somewhere? Think again. The quality of your care is directly related to how well you take care of yourself during this very difficult time.

· Be honest with yourself. Understand that you cannot possibly do everything yourself. Ask someone to share some of their responsibilities of your caregiving.

· Make an immediate commitment to return to some of your hobbies or interests. Do not feel guilty if you take a little time for yourself.

There are many ways to help yourself if you feel like you are experiencing caregiver burnout. You can solicit the help of your family or friends or you can investigate various caregiver support services. You cannot do anything, however, until you accept your limitations and recognize that you may need some help. Remember, you will be a better caregiver to your loved one if you take good care of yourself.

If you are stressed or need a break from your caregining duties to your loved one, call Sateri Homes for respite care in our facility or our day care services in our facility or in your home.
